Sierra Leone Orphanage
Nestled between Guinea and Liberia, the nation of Sierra Leone is often overlooked. As one of the poorest countries in the world, its population of more than six million is fighting to overcome the immense turmoil that has come to define its political climate.
Since the 2001 ceasefire that ended the decade of civil war, the country has struggled to recover. Outbreaks of disease as well as failing infrastructure and a high unemployment rate continue to threaten its progress.
60% of Sierra Leoneans are living below the poverty line. The adult literacy rate is at 41% compared to the global literacy rate of more than 80%. The low amount of teachers and resources makes primary education difficult to make available to all.
While these facts paint a grim picture we know that God is in control and he have not forsaken the people of Sierra Leone.
In 2008 Andre received an email from Emmanuel in Sierra Leone asking for help. A visit to Emmanuel followed by many prayers turned out to be quite an adventure. Andre wasn't aware that he needed a special visa to enter this country, fortunately he just had enough money on him to pay for it, but that left him without any money with the result that the first four days of his visit both of them had no money to buy food.
Upon arrival at a little town called Kenema, he felt God's leading to join forces with Emmanuel. On his way back they were too late for the ferry to cross the ocean to Freetown Airport. His only other choice of transport was a single engine motorboat. They eventually got into the little boat and started their journey accross the ocean. Then it started raining, and the engine gave a few stutters and then died completely. The wind started blowing and the little boat started drifting into the ocean. Andre was pretty sure that this was the end, his family had no contact numbers, they only knew that he was somewhere in Sierra Leone and wouldb e waiting for him at the airport in South Africa. But God had other plans, help was on its way - another little boat spotted them and came to their rescue!
In March 2009 we had our first semester in Sierra Leone in the little village Pendembu with 13 students.
In 2012 we opened the orphanage in Sierra Leone in Pendembu village with 48 children.
Currently 52 orphans in our orphanage in the remote area of Pendembu Village with no running water or electricity. Since we have opened this orphanage, we have seen afraid, unloved children who knew nothing about Jesus, transform into happy healthy children, worshipping Jesus because they are experiencing His love in a tangible way.
