Improved health of communities. When there is no access to electricity, the majority of people living in rural areas are forced to use unsafe, poor quality or toxic devices to get light in the evening.

Money
Money

Solar light saves money. Economic empowerment of community members. Candles, kerosene and batteries are expensive. The average rural family will spend 10% of their income on energy.

Lives
Lives

Solar light saves lives. For many families the only choice to escape the darkness is an open flame. This causes many fires and many lives are lost unnecessarily.

Education
Education

A solar light improves education. Many families do not have enough kerosene for children to study or do their homework after dark, with a solar light children can study at better light and for longer hours.

The Road Ahead

Continuing with the Journey

Mt. Elgon together with its partners Hands on Africa and the Green Light Planet (a company working to contribute to green energy revolution in Kenya) aim to distribute solar lamps to 500 homes.

Persons to benefit from the project will be selected through a participatory process involving local government leaders and faith leaders.

MEPI staff will undertake weekly field visits to communities where solar lamps were donated to monitor the performance and progression of the project.
